St James’s Church, Piccadilly

St James’s Church is situated on Piccadilly with another entrance on Jermyn Street.

It is a historic building which forms the tope of the cross on the orb and sceptre formed by the layout of local roads.

St James's Church, Jermyn Street, London, SW1

Excerpt from ‘The Illustrated London News’ August 9, 1947…

For nearly seven years St James’s Piccadilly, has stood roofless and ruined, a poignant reminder of the air attacks of the “Big Blitz” winter of 1940-41.

A portion of the south aisle was temporarily repaired so that services could be held; and last year, as the result of a suggestion made by the late Lord Southwood, the churchyard was made into a garden of remembrance to commemorate London’s fortitude during the war.

Repair work will shortly start on the north wall, which has become unsafe. St. James’s Grinling Gibbons carvings include the font at which Lord Chesterfield and Lord Chatham were christened; and among the well-known men buried there are the two Willem Van de Veldes (marine painters), Gillray the caricaturist and “Old Q.,” the fourth Duke of Queensberry”

Soho Soho Soho has published a post about Regent Street. As Regent Street is arguably in Mayfair we thought we would post the link for your interest.

AccessorizeOne of the most famous shopping streets in London Regent Street is named after the Prince Regent, who later became King George IV, and is a wonderful, wide, sweeping street with outstanding architectural facades reaching from Piccadilly Circus to Wigmore Street. Every building on Regent Street is under Grade 2 protected status to prevent them being torn down for redevelopment.

Whether Regent Street forms part of Soho or Mayfair is open to debate.
